GUGLIELMO ACHILLE CAVELLINI : TOWARDS 2014
OCTOBER 19 - NOVEMBER 9 2011
Lucie Fontaine is very proud to present an exhibition featuring the work of Guglielmo Achille Cavellini (1914-1990), which is part of a bigger project organized by the Estate of Guglielmo Achille Cavellini entitled “Towards 2014.”
The exhibition includes Autoritratto Impertinente [Impertinent Self Portrait] from 1985, a ‘fragmented’ work from 1970, and the video Un giornata della vita di un Genio [A day in the life of a Genius] from 1981, together with a composition consisting of his mail art tools, a work that highlights in particular Cavellini’s notion of “self-historicization.” In fact, this exhibition is part of the celebration of the author’s centenary (1914-2014). A new sticker that features the Italian flag has been produced for this occasion.
From 1946 until 1958 Guglielmo Achille Cavellini collected the work of his contemporaries, mainly European abstract painters. In the early 60s he returned to his own artistic production making works that recuperated personal objects with references to 20th-Century masters. In 1971 he coined the term “self-historicization” through which he invented a mode of international communication within the art system, in effect creating works in which he exalted the transformation of the figure of the artist through self-promotion.
