ALICE MANDELLI : TUTTO SU

SEPTEMBER 16 - OCTOBER 14 2011

Personally, I think of an artist as a possibility.

Like the arrow slit of a castle, which someone points out to me so I can look through it and see a land that otherwise I would have never discovered by myself.

Every artist I have met is like a missing chance, a landscape I am unable to imagine.

Like every color I have never used, like a flavor I have never tasted.

An artist is for me what the Mulholland Drive is for the city of Los Angeles, or The Twelve Apostles in Australia, or the highest floor of the Mori Tower in Tokyo.

An artist represents a possibility.

Sometimes, perhaps without me realizing it, someone brings me up to a mountain peak and the view is really amazing.

The vision “from the top” is always something curious, stupefying for someone like me, who cannot fly.

In this spirit, I am happy to share with the world some of the innumerous drawings Alice Mandelli has been sharing with me over the last two years of our collaboration.

The work of Alice is not a spectacle, but a ‘maschera’ [mask], which is how the Italians refer to the nice people who find your seat when you go to the theater.

For this reason, the artist, invited to do a solo project at my space in via Larga in Milan, decided to present her work as a landscape — a backdrop — for the night of the season's opening.

On this night the music, the food and our guests will not be accompanying the drawings — but rather the other way around.
