2014 : THAI SALAD, BUDAPEST ART FACTORY

http://www.budapestartfactory.com

The Budapest Art Factory (BAF) is pleased to present “Thai Salad” a project by Lucie Fontaine. The project will take place in Budapest in May, June and July 2014.

The title comes from the method of preparation of salads in Thai cuisine, which usually includes a quadrilateral taste consisting of four corners : hot, sweet, sour and salty. The title also echoes the legendary work by Rirkrit Tiravanija entitled pad thai (1990) which was presented at the Paula Allen Gallery in New York, in which he “rejected traditional art objects altogether and instead cooked and served food for exhibition visitors.” Instead of cooking for the visitors of the Budapest Art Factory, Lucie Fontaine will offer four presentations by four different individuals, in deference to the four corners used in the preparation of a Thai salad. The individuals are : Daria D. Pervain, Ory Dessau, Áron Fenyvesi and Lisa Rosendahl.

First encounter • May 16
Based in Cluj-Napoca, Daria D. Pervain will explain the premises of Sabot, a project she started in 2009 after being a journalist and critic. Working both as a commercial gallery and as a small foundation, Sabot has been an active presence in the Romanian art scene, working with local artists but also doing international presentations and artist residencies.

Second encounter • May 31
Based in Berlin, Ory Dessau will present his curatorial sensibility – between the poetic and the political – and will explain exhibition projects such as “Second Strike” and “Guess who died,” which explored the image and physiognomy of the late Palestinian President, Yasser Arafat. He will also speak about his upcoming projects and his understanding of exhibition making.

Third encounter • June 12
Based in Budapest, Áron Fenyvesi will speak about projects he curated – such as “Haunting Monumentality II” and “Boogie Woogie” – that are contextualizing Hungarian artists within the Central European scene and beyond. He will also speak about his role at Trafó House of Contemporary Art in Budapest and how he transformed its exhibition space into a laboratory for young and emerging artists.

Fourth encounter • July 2
Based in Stockholm, a curator at the Statens konstråd (Public Art Agency Sweden), Lisa Rosendahl has organized several projects analyzing the notion of authorship, signature and labor in the field of visual art. She will speak about her recent project with SUPERFLEX at Kunsthal Charlottenborg, as well as conceptual curating and analysis of authorship as forms of institutional critique.

The four meetings will happen at the Budapest Art Factory at 8 pm and they will be open to the public. In parallel to these public events, Lucie Fontaine and her employees will organize domestic and improvised discussions at her house in Budapest analyzing the state of visual and art and the situation in Hungary.

Lucie Fontaine was born in 1982 in Colmar, where she currently lives and works. Together with her employees, she invites artists to exhibit at her space in Milan and at the same time she exhibits her artworks, curates exhibitions, organizes lectures and edits books elsewhere and she is currently working on a project focused on the Bitcoin system that will open on June 26 2014 at Eli Ping Frances Perkins in New York.
