Sabot is glad to present “i-n-v-e-n-t-o-r-y,” a solo show by Lucie Fontaine. The starting point of the show lays in its own title: while the term “inventory” defines something that has been left, that is already there, “a record of one’s possessions,” the very same noun includes “invent”, which means to make “something previously unknown.” Once again, Lucie Fontaine’s practice attempts to question the notion of creativity and, by consequence, its relationship to distribution and, therefore, its status in today’s porous and interchangeable reality. In this case, the use of her own oeuvres, what already exists, becomes a way to connect the figure of the creator with that of the editor. In doing so, Lucie Fontaine will present an inventory of her artistic practice: artworks, images, books, and printed matters that she already presented in other venues, mixed with new material selected from her digital database, which for this occasion have been translated into objects. During the days of the show, Sabot’s space will literally become Lucie Fontaine’s personal inventory, where everything on display will also be “detailed, itemized, and listed” by the gallery owner, Daria D. Pervain. Through this condition, Sabot’s two spaces and, most generally, the art gallery dichotomy par excellence – exhibition space versus storage space – will collide and stand side by side.

After The Nine Talismans, published by Fruit and Flower Deli / Eldridge Optician Creative Group, and Exceptions co-authored with Claire Fontaine and published by The Green Gallery Press, Lucie Fontaine is working on two publications: The Estate of Lucie Fontaine, published by Marianne Boesky Gallery, and Three Billion Employees: A possible anthology of signature, authorship, creativity, and labour. A new publication will follow her project at Sabot.
